Empysema is pus within a body cavity most often the pleural cavity.

- Pleural effusion
- Pneumonia
- Lung abscess
- Tuberculosis
- Fungal infection
- After thorax surgery
- Chest trauma
Clinical features:
- Cough
- Dysponea
- Tachyponea
- Tachycardia
- Fever
- Unilateral chest expansion
- Malaise
- Decrease appetite
Investigation:
- X-ray chest
- Thoracenthesis
Medical Management:
- Antibiotics Surgical Management:
- Thoracenthesis
Nursing Management:
- Oxygen inhalation
- Bed rest
- Deep breathing exercise
- Provide ventilated room
- Encouraging the patient for co-operation.
